Job Description
Entomologist with a passion for developing natural insect control solutions. Insect control expertise should include command of arthropod control technologies including active ingredients, delivery systems, and application innovations. You should have a thorough understanding of surface/subsurface lawn insect controls, indoor and home perimeter controls, and consumer vegetable, fruit, and ornamental arthropod control technologies. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
1. PLANT PROTECTION
a. Monitors insect pest populations in assigned portions of the State;
b. Assists in evaluating results of surveys and studies conducted;
c. Coordinates and provides liaison with USDA regulatory personnel regarding federal regulations, reports or cooperative activities;
d. Recommends appropriate plant pest control measures;
e. Aids in implementing plant quarantines in assigned areas;
f. Inspects plant nurseries, prepares reports of findings and recommends control measures to alleviate potential problem conditions;
g. Conducts surveys of commercial plant materials;
2. PEST MANAGEMENT
a. Conducts field surveys to determine areas infested by insect pests and the degree of infestation;
b. Assists in conducting insect control programs using biological, chemical or mechanical methods;
c. May perform insect taxonomy related to specific pest problems;
d. Assists in evaluating survey results and control measures implemented;
e. Investigates complaints arising from control work performed;
3. PESTICIDES
a. Prepares educational materials and assists in presenting training courses concerning pesticides and their uses;
b. Prepares and administers examinations to persons who must be certified by the Department to use pesticides either privately or commercially;
c. Inspects commercial pesticide operations and retail outlets to ensure compliance with State laws;
d. Investigates complaints, incidents or accidents involving the use of pesticides;
Requirements & Skills
1. PLANT PROTECTION
a. Introductory knowledge of the various types of insects affecting ornamental plants and fruit trees; of plant quarantine methods and procedures; of plant pathology; of insect taxonomy;
2. PEST MANAGEMENT OPTION
a. Introductory knowledge of the use and characteristics of common pesticides; of methods and techniques of pest management; of insect taxonomy;
3. PESTICIDES OPTION
a. Introductory knowledge of basic techniques of structural pest control operations; of the characteristics and use of common pesticides;
